Post-Op Instructions

Implant Placement

Your implant is in, and I'm pleased with how the procedure went. The healing phase ahead is the most important part — the implant needs to fuse to your bone gradually over the next few months. Your care in these early weeks sets the foundation for everything that follows.

After your procedure

  1. 1

    Rest today and tomorrow

Take it easy for the rest of today. Avoid any strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or exercise for at least 48–72 hours — elevated heart rate increases bleeding and swelling.

  2. 2

Ice for the first 24 hours, then warmth

Apply ice to the outside of your face — 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off — for the entire first 24 hours. After that, switch to a warm compress if it helps. Starting early makes a real difference.

  3. 3

Leave the implant site completely alone

Don't touch the site with your tongue or finger. The implant needs to stay still to begin fusing with your bone. Any poking or movement during early healing can affect the outcome.

  4. 4

No straws — let it drool out instead

Do not use a straw for at least a week. When rinsing, fill your mouth with water, close your lips, gently shake your head side to side — then open and let it fall out. No cheek pressure and no spitting.

  5. 5

No smoking for 7 days (ideally longer)

Smoking significantly impairs healing and is one of the leading causes of implant failure. Please avoid it for at least 7 days after placement — the longer you go without, the better your chances of long-term success.

  6. 6

Soft diet for at least a week

Stick to soft foods the whole first week: ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies (no straw!), mashed potatoes, yogurt, blended soup, scrambled eggs. Chew on the opposite side. No hard, crunchy, or chewy foods near the implant.

  7. 7

    No hot foods or drinks

Avoid hot food and drinks, especially in the first 24–48 hours. Heat increases swelling and can irritate the healing tissue around the implant.

  8. 8

Rinse gently starting 48 hours after surgery

Beginning 48 hours after your procedure, rinse several times a day with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 oz of water). Use the gentle head-shake method — fill with water, shake head side to side, then open and let it fall out. No pressure on the cheeks.

  9. 9

    Take your medications as directed

Antibiotics protect the implant from infection — please finish the full course. Take anti-inflammatories on a schedule for the first 48 hours rather than waiting for pain to peak.

  10. 10

    Keep your mouth clean, gently

Brush your other teeth normally. Around the implant site, be very gentle — avoid brushing directly on it for the first few days. Good hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for implant healing.
